KUGTONG

"KUGTONG"

(a short history of Alcantara)

The municipality of Alcantara's previous name was "Kugtong".

The name was derived from the kind of Giant Grouper Fish having the scientific name "Epinephelus lanceolatus" which thrived in the springs of Alcantara.

The Spanish Conquistadores changed it to "Alcantara" and named it after one of their provinces in Spain because of similar geographical locations, such as a bridge connecting the school and the public market.  Alcantara was an Arabic word Al-Qantarah ( the bridge ). 

Was previously a barrio of Moalboal but was separated and became a town in 1830.

During the American Period in 1912, the first Mayor was Felipe Llenos.

During World War 2,  the Guerillas of Southern Cebu Sector organized the RAF ( Ronda- Alcantara Force ) fighting unit with Lt. Eutiquio S. Acebes as their Local Commander which was then absorbed as  the Cebu Area Command Southern Cebu Sector under Lt. Col. Luis Jakosalem. ( page 245 Koga Papers written by Colonel Manuel Segura). In Alcantara our Patron Saint is St. Augustine of Hippo which we celebrate every 28th of August.

We also do have a Tourist attraction including this fabled Kugtong Spring in Baragay Poblacion.

HOW TO GET HERE: 3 Hours from Cebu South bus terminal to Alcantara. P150 approx.

On this year 2022, days before our Fraternity's founding anniversary which upon is celebrated at every 8th of August, we had carried out a Cleanup drive. For which it would also be the venue of our celebration.

At the day of the feast we had a chance to have a photo with the local Mayor of our beloved town.

Each of us had contributed an amount for our foods& etc., enough to spend the whole day together merrily celebrating the special day.

Everyone had fun on the gathering, this footage was just a glimpse of it. It was a memorable fun and was a day of  immense enjoyment. 

                The infamous Kugtong spring is not only a venue of fun and celebrations.

                                         religious practices such as baptisms are also held here.

Last 2019 we also had our first ever pool party in alcantara that is held in the Kugtong spring. It was then to celebrate the feast of St. John the baptist.
