KUGTONG
" KUGTONG " (a short history of Alcantara) The municipality of Alcantara's previous name was "Kugtong". The name was derived from the kind of Giant Grouper Fish having the scientific name "Epinephelus lanceolatus" which thrived in the springs of Alcantara. (A statue representing the legendary Kugtong & the Kugtong spring) The Spanish Conquistadores changed it to "Alcantara" and named it after one of their provinces in Spain because of similar geographical locations, such as a bridge connecting the school and the public market. Alcantara was an Arabic word Al-Qantarah ( the bridge ). Was previously a barrio of Moalboal but was separated and became a town in 1830. During the American Period in 1912, the first Mayor was Felipe Llenos. During World War 2, the Guerillas of Southern Cebu Sector organized the RAF ( Ronda- Alcantara Force ) fighting unit with Lt.
